I have found the Remington subsonic HPs to be a good round for hunting small game. They are fairly easy to find too, and aren't as expensive as some of the subsonic ammo out there.
Lots of people grew up hunting with .22 shorts, and preferred them over LR. The subsonic LR has greater killing power than a short, and will actually cycle some autoloaders.
For a pistol, though, I don't bother with subsonics because regular .22 LR high speed ammo is still subsonic from most pistols, and the "subsonic" ammo is just as loud from a pistol as is promo .22 LR.

I really like the Aguila SE Subsonic. It shoots well in many of my manual loading rimfires - it won't reliably cycle any of my autoloaders. It used to be a great value at $15 a brick and would shoot nearly as good as the ammo -RWS, Wolf - that cost twice as much. Haven't seen any lately. Wish I would have bought more...
